In the world of rat breeding, the term “Buff” often serves as a broad umbrella in both the UK and the US, encompassing non-agouti rats with the red eye dilute gene. However, the official show standard for Buff leans toward a warm magnolia hue, akin to magnolia paint rather than the flower. These enchanting Buff rats typically have eyes that, at first glance, may appear black but, upon closer inspection, reveal a mesmerizing and deep ruby color. When we speak of Buff coloring within our rat family, we’re referring to our magnificent mink-colored rats that carry the red eye dilute gene. This captivating variety is most frequently found within our odd eye mink line. As newborns, they may appear nearly white, but there’s a subtle hint of tan or gray to their coats. Their eyes enchant with a range of colors, including red, ruby, and the occasional odd eye, adding a delightful layer of diversity to this remarkable breed.
