The enchanting world of Harley rats unveils a distinctive, long, soft, and fine coat, characterized by a charming absence of an undercoat. Within the realm of Harley lines, one can discover a range of coat variations, from wispy and sparse to luxuriously luscious locks. However, it’s important to note that Harley rats may occasionally grapple with skin conditions, so it’s advisable to have an open dialogue with your breeder about their lines and any issues related to hair loss, scaly skin, or dryness. At our rattery, we’ve also observed that Harley rats may experience dry skin, and we’ve shared valuable insights on this matter through our blog to ensure their comfort.
Molting is a comical and common occurrence in the first three months of a Harley rat’s life, adding a touch of whimsy to their charming character. The Harley gene, known for its recessiveness, has been an integral part of our breeding efforts, and we’ve dedicated considerable time and effort to incorporate it into our lines. It’s important to be aware of a few key considerations when adopting Harley rats, such as their unique dietary needs. While most Harley rats are comfortable with normal to slightly lower protein levels, it’s advisable to avoid high-protein treats like eggs or chicken and steer clear of rat blocks with elevated protein percentages, such as Mazuri.
In 2023, we’re thrilled to share that our Harley line is the healthiest it’s ever been, with significantly reduced fur loss compared to 2019. Notably, in the standard-sized Harley rats, we’ve observed thicker fur compared to our dwarf lines. My rattery partner and I have grown deeply fond of these remarkable creatures, as their incredible temperament has truly stolen our hearts. Despite their need for specific care, we wholeheartedly recommend Harley rats, even to first-time adopters or families, as their unique personalities and captivating charm make them wonderful additions to any home.
